The platypus is one of the most bizarre creatures in nature.
It’s a mammal, yet it lays eggs. It has a duck-like beak, a tail similar to a beaver’s, and legs like an otter’s. On top of that, it’s venomous.
As if that weren’t unusual enough, it has electroreceptors to detect prey, eyes that combine mammalian and reptilian traits, and no stomach—its throat connects directly to its intestines. It also has 10 sex chromosomes, whereas humans only have two.
And to top it all off, their fur glows under ultraviolet light.

Amizade improvável? - Pesquisadores registraram uma 'amizade' inesperada na Amazônia entre uma jaguatirica e um gambá.
Os animais, que geralmente têm uma relação de presa e predador, foram filmados juntos, andando lado a lado, sem qualquer sinal de ataque.
Pesquisadores da Estação Biológica Cocha Cashu, no sudeste do Peru, instalaram câmeras para estudar o comportamento das aves, mas, por acaso, captaram a cena inusitada.
Após o vídeo, os pesquisadores consultaram outros colegas que também monitoram imagens da floresta amazônica e, para surpresa, encontraram mais três registros semelhantes: jaguatiricas e gambás caminhando lado a lado, sem hostilidade.
Foi o suficiente para iniciar um experimento inédito. Os cientistas colocaram tiras de tecido com aromas diferentes em frente às câmeras: uma com cheiro de jaguatirica, outra com cheiro de puma, e uma terceira sem odor, como controle.
O resultado chamou atenção: os gambás visitaram o tecido com cheiro de jaguatirica 12 vezes, frequentemente se esfregando e cheirando o material. Já o tecido com cheiro de puma recebeu apenas uma visita rápida.
Ainda não se sabe ao certo o motivo desse comportamento, mas os pesquisadores trabalham com algumas hipóteses, como proteção mútua, camuflagem olfativa do gambá e estratégia de caça da jaguatirica.
